Chapter Five

“I’m getting my spell book.” Mercy moved to the large frog mosaic on the wall. After examining the artwork for a few seconds, she plucked out a tiny blue tile and placed it on the table. Using her wand, she tapped the tile three times.

“Spell book return!”

Jaden watched with admiration, as the tiny tile grew into a large gilded tome.

“Well done.”

Mercy smiled — the same brilliant smile he remembered, the smile that used to warm his heart and cause him to think all was right with the world. It still warmed his heart, but nothing was right with the world. The fate of humanity and that of light magic dominance rested in their hands.

“What are you looking at?” Mercy asked.

“You — you’ve changed. You’re stronger — more confidant — more beautiful,” he replied.

Mercy blushed and turned her attention back to the monstrous book. “We need to get busy. The clock is ticking.”

“You’re right.” Jaden moved beside her and looked at the book. “Let’s see — we need to rescue Jeremy and Taylor, deal with Ludor’s minions, and destroy Ludor.” He shook his head and rubbed his tired eyes. “You got a spell for that?”

“No — but this book has spells for almost everything else. Surely we can find one or two we could use.” Mercy thumbed through the pages, her gaze rapidly moving over the words.

“Let’s deal with the minions first. Their magic is minimal compared to Ludor’s. The big guy makes sure he can easily manipulate those around him,” Jaden said.

“So — we need a spell to incapacitate them quickly.” Mercy continued searching through the yellowed pages.

“Can’t we find a spell that will get rid of them permanently?” Jaden would just as soon kill them all now so he wouldn’t have to do it later.

He leaned in closer to Mercy, intoxicated by her exotic scent. He had to find a way to make amends before they faced Ludor tonight. This may be his last chance to make things right.

Mercy turned to face him, her green eyes filled with curiosity. “Killing them would take too much of our power. We will need to conserve our energy if we plan on destroying Ludor and rescuing the kids.”

“So what are you thinking — a sleeping or paralyzing spell?’ “No — I’m looking for something unexpected. I want to throw Ludor off guard.” As Mercy continued to browse through the spells, and a wicked smile came to her lips. “Here we go.” She pointed to the opened page.

“A confusion spell?” Jaden couldn’t see how that would be better than incapacitating the warlocks physically.

“Why is this spell better?”

“Ludor will waste precious time trying to direct his cronies, but they will not understand him or remember what to do. The ensuing chaos will give you the opportunity for a surprise attack on Ludor while I rescue the kids.”

Jaden found the look of satisfaction on Mercy’s face endearing. “I like the way you think, Mercy.” He smiled at her.

She smiled back at him, instantly warming his heart.
